The American library association was founded by Justin Winsor, Charles Ammi Cutter, Samuel S. Green, James L. Whitney, Melvil Dewey, Fred B. Perkins and Thomas W. Bicknell in 1876 Philadelphia and chartered in 1879 in Massachusetts. The head office of American library association is in Chicago. The American library association is a non-profitable organization based in the United States that promotes library and library education internationally. It is the oldest and largest library association in the world with more than 62,000 members.

The official purpose of the association is to promote library service and librarianship. Members may join one or more of eleven membership divisions that deal with specialized topics such as academic, school or public libraries, technical or reference services, and library administration. Members can also join any of seventeen round tables that are grouped around more specific interests and issues than the broader sets of American libraries association divisions.

American library annual conference is the largest event dedicated to the professional growth of librarians in the world. More than 20,000 of librarians, library staffs, trustees and others attend this conference each year. American library association divisions, round tables and committees present more than 300 programs and preconference on a wide variety of topics more than 1000 companies showcase the latest information products and services. The Midwinter meeting is more than just committee work. It also holds an amazing array of workshops and discussion groups along with full and half day institutes and a great exhibit hall of library vendors. It is a great blend of national and regional meeting styles.

In addition, three American library association divisions, the American Association of School Librarians (AASL), Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) and the Public Library Association (PLA), offer separate national programs and exhibit for their members. These divisional conferences are more compact than American library association’s conference, offer programs and exhibit for special libraries and a chance to collaborate in the workshop. No business committee meetings are held at these conferences, allowing for more personal learning focus for attendees virtual conferences are also being offered by divisions. You can also talk about new books on favorite topics like the HCG diet and other health related or popular topics that increase readership.

The association to library service to children, the reference user services association, and young adult services association offer biannual national institutes that focus on continuous education for members and other professionals to keep them updated in trends in librarianship. The library and association offers an annual national institute or forum.

The American library association held several of conferences, some are occasional and evenly. There are two largest conferences, the one is annual conference and the other is midwinter meeting. These conferences are held to set up some disputes all the librarians, staff members and trustees are invited to American library conference. The midwinter meeting is typically held in January and focused on internal business, while the annual conference is typically held in June and focused on exhibits and presentations. The American library association annual conference is notable for being one of the largest professional conferences in existence, typically drawing over 25,000 attendees.

A public library is also called a circulating library. It is a library, which is accessible by the public and is generally funded from public sources and may be operated by civil servants. Taxing bodies for public libraries may be at any level from local to national central government level. Public libraries exist in most often places in the world and are often considered as an essential part of having an educated and literate population. Public libraries are distinct from research libraries, school libraries or other special libraries in that their mandate is to serve the public’s information needs generally as well as offering materials for general entertainment and leisure purposes. Public libraries provide free services such as preschool story times to encourage early literacy. Public libraries are typically lending libraries, allowing users to take books and other materials off the premises temporarily; they also have none circulating reference collections. Public libraries primarily focus on popular materials such as popular fiction and movies as well as educational and non – fiction materials of interest to the general public; computer and internet access are often offered.

An online public library is an online data base of materials held by a library or group of libraries. Users search a library catalog principally to locate books and other materials physically located at a library.

Public librarians now assist many patrons with federal state, and local government agencies services that have moved almost exclusively online. Government provides many services to the online public libraries. They provide access to and assistance navigating e- government websites. They provide assistance filling in forms and sending emails related to obtaining forms. They help writing employment letters and resumes, completing employment and unemployment applications and searching employment data base. They provide creating email accounts and locating government information such as government assistance and grants, Medicare benefits, immigration and naturalization regulations, tax forms, hunting and fishing licenses and so on.

In addition to these services, a growing number of public libraries reported collaborating with government agencies. Also, patrons expect that public libraries provide free internet access and trust library staff members to assist them in the use of e – government services. With the growth in e – government expected to continue, defining e – government services roles for practical applications in the public libraries may assist libraries in planning for the provision of these services and better understanding the resources that would be needed to offer such services.

As more commercial and government services are being provided, online public libraries increasingly provide internet access for users who otherwise would not be able to connect to these services. Part of the public library mission has become attempting to help bridge the digital divide. In addition to internet access, many public libraries offer training and support to computer users. Once access has been achieved, there still remains a large gap between people’s online abilities and skills. For communities, the public library is the only agency offering free computer classes and information technology learning.

Banned books are books to which free access is not permitted. The practice of banning books is a form of censorship and often has political, religious or moral motivations. Bens on books can be enacted at national level and carry legal penalties for their infraction.

Books may also be challenged at a local community level. As a result, books can be removed from schools and libraries, although these bans do not extend outside that area. Similarly, religions may issue list of banned books.

Almost every country places restrictions on what may be published, although the emphasis and the degree of control differ from country to country and at different periods. They are variety of reasons for which books may be banned. Materials are often concealed due to the professed notion of obscenity. This obscenity can apply to materials that are about sexuality, race, drugs or social standing.

Governments have also sought to ban certain books it perceives to contain material that could threaten, embarrass and criticize it. Other leaders outside the government have banned books, including religious authorities. Church leaders who prohibit members of their faith from reading the banned books may want to shelter them from perceived obscene, immoral, or profane ideas or situation. Nevertheless, even religious materials have been subject to censorship. For example, various scriptures have been banned and have sometimes burned at several points in history. The Bible and other religious scriptures have all been subjected to censorship and have been banned by various governments. Similarly, books based on the scriptures have also been banned, such as Leo Tolstoy’s The Kingdom of God is Within You, which was banned in the Russian empire for being anti – establishment.

Many people think that challenges, book censorship and book banning are things that happened in the distant past. When people challenge books, it is generally out of a concern that the contents of the book will be harmful to the reader. According to ALA, there are four motivating factors. These factors are as follows:

Family values

Religion

Political values

Minority rights

The age level for which a book is intended does not guarantee that someone would not try to censor it. However, the emphasis seems to be on challenges to children and young adult books, attempts are also mounted to restrict access to certain adult books. Most complaints are made by parents and are directed to public and schools.

Several organizations have sprung up in response to concerns about censorship of children’s books. When the Harry Potter books came under attack, a number of organizations joined together to establish Muggles for Harry Potter, which is now known as kidSPEAK and focuses on being a voice for kids in fighting censorship in general.

PABBIS stands for parents against bad books in school, is just one of the number of parents groups around the country challenging children’s and young adult books in class room teaching and in schools and public libraries. These parents go beyond wanting to restrict access to certain books for their own children.

The American library association is a non-profitable organization based in the United States that promotes library and library education internationally. It is the oldest and largest library association in the world with more than 62,000 members.

American library association membership is open to any person or organization, though most of its members are libraries or librarians. Most people live and work in the United States, with international members comprising 3.5% of total membership.

The American library association is governed by an elected council and an executive board. Since 2002, Keith Michael Fiels has been the American library association executive director. Policies and programs are administered by various committees and round tables. One of the organization’s most visible tasks is overseen by the Office for Accreditation, which formally reviews and authorizes American and Canadian academic institutions that offer degree programs in library and information science. The American library association’s current prime minister is Molly Raphael.

The American library association id affiliated with regional, state and student chapters across the country. It organizes conferences, participates in the library standard development and publishes a number of books and periodicals. The American library association publishes the magazines American libraries and Booklist. Along with other organizations, it sponsors the annual Banned Books Week the last week of September.

The American library association positions on United States political issues that it believes are related to library and librarianship. For court cases that touch on issues about which the organization holds positions, the American library association often files amici curiae briefs, voluntarily offering information on some aspect of the case to assist the court in deciding a matter before it. The American library association has an office in Washington, D.C., that lobbies congress on issues relating to libraries, information and communication. It also provides material to libraries that may include information on how to apply for grants, how to comply with the law and how to oppose a law.

The primary documented expressions of the American library association intellectual freedom principles are the Freedom to Read Statement, and the Library Bill of Rights; the library bill of rights urges libraries to challenge the censorship in the fulfillment of their responsibility to provide information and enlightenment. The American code of ethics also calls on librarians to “uphold the principal of intellectual freedom and resist all efforts to censor library resources”.
